Dial-up Networking for Windows 95/98
What You Need
- A PC running Windows 95 or 98.
- A properly configured modem that is 14,400bps or faster. Wesleyan's modem bank supports speeds up to 33.3kbps, meaning 56k modems will connect fine, but will only function at that lower speed. For instructions on setting up your modem, consult the documentation that came with you modem.
- Your Windows 95/98 installation CD or diskettes.
Installing DUN (Dial-up Networking)
- First, check to see if DUN is already installed. Open My Computer. If the Dial-up Networking folder is present, then DUN is installed and you can skip to step three. Otherwise continue to step two.
- In the Start Menu go to Settings and then Control Panel. In the Control Panel window, double click on Add/Remove Programs. Click the Windows Setup tab at the top of the Add/Remove Programs window. Under Components, highlight Communications by clicking on it once, and make sure the box on the left is checked. Click once on Communications in the Components area to highlight it. Click the Details button (towards the bottom). Make sure Dial-Up Networking is checked. If it is not, check it, Click OK and then OK again at the bottom of the Add/Remove Programs window. If you computer asks you to restart choose No.
- In the Control Panel window, double click on the Network icon. If you have never installed networking on your computer before, the white area towards the top should be empty. If there are items in that area make sure you have: Dial-up Adapter and TCP/IP (you may have TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter). If you have both of these, skip steps four and five. If you have Dial-Up Adapter but not TCP/IP go to step five.
- Click the Add button and double click Adapter. In the Select Network Adapters window that appears, click on Microsoft on the left to highlight it and then double click on Dial-Up Adapter. You will be brought back to the initial Network window. The white area at the top will now contain at least Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP.
- If you do not have TCP/IP but do have Dial-Up Adapter, click on Add, double click on Protocol, click once on Microsoft in the left hand area and double click on TCP/IP in the rightmost area.
Configuring PPP
- In the same Network window, double-click on TCP/IP. This will bring up a TCP/IP Properties window.
- Click on the IP Address tab and make sure Obtain and IP address automatically is chosen.
- Click on the DNS Configuration tab. Ensure Enable DNS is selected. In the Host box, type your e-mail username and in the Domain box, type stu.wesleyan.edu. Below these two there is a section entitled DNS Server Search Order. In the box with the three periods, enter the following number: 129.133.1.51 and then click the Add button. The number you just typed will appear in the box just below. Note the spacing of the periods between the numbers and check it for accuracy with the number written above.
- Click the OK button at the bottom of this window and click OK once more at the bottom of the Network window. Windows will ask if you wish to restart the computer; choose Yes. If you were not prompted, you must restart your computer now.
The Connection to Wesleyan
- Once your computer has restarted, select Programs in your Start Menu, then Accessories and finally Dial-Up Networking. This will bring up a Dial-Up Networking window.
- If you already have a "Wesleyan" connection, you can skip to step 4. Double-click on Make a New Connection. In the window which appears, type a name for the computer you are dialing; choose something like "Wesleyan" which is easy to remember. Check the Select a Modem box ensuring it matches the modem you wish to use. Click the Next button.
- Enter 685-7488 (685-7388 if you are faculty/staff) in the Telephone number box. If you are calling long distance, you will need to add 1860 to the front. If you have call waiting, you need to add *70 to the front. Click the Next button and then the Finish button.
- Back in the Dial-Up Networking window, click once with the right mouse button on the Wesleyan connection you just created and choose Properties. Click on the Server Types tab. In the Advanced options section the only items which should be checked are Log on to network and Enable software compression; uncheck the last option. Only TCP/IP should be checked in the Allowed network protocols section; uncheck all the others.
- In this same window, click the TCP/IP Settings button. In the first section ensure Server assigned IP address is selected. The second section needs to be put on Server assigned names server addresses. To complete this section, click the OK button.
- You will want to obtain from us a connection script that enables you to connect to Wesleyan more easily. This is not necessary but makes connecting easier. Unfortunately, you need to be attached to the Internet to get these items. Therefore perform the following configuration (you may also do this if you do not want to use scripting): Get back to the Wesleyan window you opened in step four. Click on Configure at the bottom. Select the Options tab in the window which appears. Check the Bring up terminal window after dialing option towards the top. Click OK at the bottom and OK again at the Wesleyan window.
Connecting to Wesleyan
Now you will be able to connect to the Internet. The connection to Wesleyan is established by double-clicking on the Wesleyan connection icon you made in Dial-Up Networking.
For now, ignore the initial username and password boxes. After dialing, a black window will appear. You will get three prompts. The first two are for your e-mail username and password. The last says ts-its> at which point you should type ppp default and hit enter. Soon after this, hit the F7 key. The window will disappear and you will be connected to the network.
Scripting
The dial-up script is available here. You can either download this onto a floppy on campus and bring it home or grab it off our site after you connect for the first time. Older versions of DUN will need an update to use the script. That can also be downloaded here.
Installing the script:
- To download the script, right click on the link to the script and choose Save link as. Save the script as wesleyan.scp and put it in your c:\windowsdirectory.
- Once you have the script go to the Wesleyan window you opened in step four, and click on the Scripting tab.
- Type in the File name of the script, c:\windows\wesleyan.scp and uncheck the Bring up terminal window after dialing option.
- Click on OK and then OK again.
Installing the update:
- Click on the update link and when prompted, save the file in a temporary location on your hard drive (remember where you saved it).
- Click on your Start Menu and then on Run. Type explorer in the box that appears. Now find where you saved the update file and double-click on it. You will be asked where you want the files to go; just click OK.
- After that has finished, go to the Start Menu and under Settings choose Control Panel. Double-click on Add/Remove Programs in the window that appears. Next, select the Windows Setup tab at the top of the window. Click onHave Disk. Click the Browse button, and find the location where you saved the update. When you have found it, click OK and then OK again.
- You will be returned to a prior window which will have Slip and Scripting for Dial-Up Networking in the white area. If there is no check next to this item check it and click on Install. Answer Yes to any questions while the update is installing.
- Click OK one last time back at the Add/Remove Programs window. Restart your computer.
