Dial-up Networking for Windows XP
Making the Wesleyan connection
- Open the control panel by going to Settings in the start menu. Once you open control panel open the Network Connections control panel.
- Network Tasks on the left side choose Create a new connection. This will start a wizard that will walk you through the set up process.
- When it asks what type of connection, choose the first one, Connect to the internet, and then click Next. On the next question choose, Set up my connection manually and then click Next again.
- Now choose Connect using a dial up modem as how you want to connect to the internet and click Next.
- The next box will ask for your ISP name. You can simply type Wesleyan in the box or any other name you would like to use as the name for this connection. After choosing a name click Next.
- Next you will need to enter 685-7488 (685-7388 if you are faculty/staff) in the Telephone number box. If you are calling long distance, you will need to add 1-860 to the front. If you have call waiting, you need to add *70, to the front. Click the Next button.
- Simply ignore the window asking you for username and password by leaving the fields blank (for now at least, you can use these later after completing the scripting section) and select Next and then Finish.
- A window will now appear asking for a username and password. Again, leave these fields blank. Click on the Properties button at the bottom of the window. Now choose the Security tab at the top. On the bottom of the security tab page make sure that Show terminal window is selected. Then click OK.
- You will now be back at the original screen asking for a username and password. Leave these blank and click on Dial.
- Once the modem dials and establishes a connection you will see a black terminal window appear. First enter your email username at the username prompt, then enter your email password at the password prompt, finally, at the ts-its> prompt type in ppp default and hit enter. Wait a moment and then click on Done.
- You are now connected to Wesleyan, you will see a small icon of two computers next to the clock on your computer which contains information about your connection and is where you can disconnect.
Scripting
Scripting allows you to connect to Wesleyan without having to use the black terminal window. To do this, follow the directions below on how to download and install the script. The dial-up script is available here. You can either download this onto a floppy on campus and bring it home or grab it off our site after you connect for the first time.
Installing the script:
- To download the script, right click on the link to the script and choose Save link as. Save the script as wesleyan.scp and put it in your c:\windows directory.
- Once you have the script go to the Wesleyan window by choosing settings from the start menu and then going to network connections. You should now see Wesleyan (or whatever you named the connection) as a choice.
- Click on the Properties button at the bottom of the screen and then choose the Security tab at the top.
- Uncheck Show terminal window and select Run Script. Then click the Browse button and find the file wesleyan.scp. If you followed the directions above it should be under c:\windows\wesleyan.scp. Now click OK once the script is highlighted and then OK again so that you are at the original screen asking you for a username and password.
- You can now connect by simply typing your username and password into the boxes on this screen and then clicking Dial, you can also have the computer remember your username and password so that you do not need to retype them each time. To do this, simply check off Save this username and password.
