Wesleyan E-Mail Support
WebMail
WebMail is Wesleyan's web-based e-mail client. It provides an easy-to-use interface and allows you to read, write, and file your e-mail. It can be accessed through any computer with an internet connection. Because all e-mail is stored on the Wesleyan mail servers, all users are subject to a quota.
Third Party E-mail Clients
Mozilla Thunderbird is a powerful, free e-mail client available for Windows, Macintosh, and UNIX operating systems. Thunderbird is the preferred e-mail client for the IMAP protcol because it is the most effective at synchronizing the folders on the server with the folders within the client itself (see "Client Configuration Options" below). This is especially true for the Trash and Sent Mail folders.
Eudora Professional is an easy-to-use e-mail client available for both Windows and Macintosh platforms. While Wesleyan provides the SPAM Assassin tool (available in your E-portfolio), Eudora features additional filtering of spam and junk mail. Wesleyan has purchased a site license for the commercial version, which can be retrieved from the ITS Software Database. You will be required to provide your e-mail username and password before you can download it.
Microsoft Outlook is installed by default with the Microsoft Office suite. It is an advanced e-mail client with many customizable options. However, it is also a much more complicated program than any of the others; we recommend it for advanced users only.
Microsoft Outlook Express is the default e-mail client installed on Windows computers. It is simpler and easier to use than Microsoft Outlook, but it lacks many of the more advanced features of the full version.
Apple Mail (Mail.app) is the default e-mail client intalled on Macintosh computers. It features advanced spam filtering, integration with your Mac's Address Book, and a clean, easy-to-use interface.
Client Configuration Options
POP: Your computer will check for new messages on the server and download them automatically to your computer locally. By default, your mail client will then delete the messages from the server. Once message have been deleted, they will no longer be available through WebMail or any other computer. Additional POP settings allow you to store copies of new messages on the server for a certain number of days. If you choose POP, we recommend you store copies of messages on the server for 10-30 days. These messages will be available through WebMail until the specified number of days have passed; then they will be deleted. Recommended for dialup users.
IMAP: Your computer will display the contents of your messages on the server, but it will not (by default) store the messages locally. This means that you will be unable to check your email without being connected to the internet and that the message must be downloaded from the server each time you view it. However, this also allows you to check your email through WebMail or using multiple computers. Emails can be downloaded to your computer by simply dragging and dropping them into the local folders in the margin. Emails can be deleted from the server by dragging them to the trash. Recommended for broadband users.
Client Security Options
SSL encryption is enabled on the Wesleyan mail servers. However, in order to enable SSL encryption, you may need specify which ports to use in your email client. If you enable SSL encryption, please configure your client to use these ports:
- If you are using IMAP, you should set your Incoming Mail server port to 993.
- If you are using POP, you should set your Incoming Mail server port to 995.
- To send mail securely, you should set your SMTP (Outgoing Mail) server port to 465.
