Resnet for Mac OS X

Getting Started

To use the Residential Network at Wesleyan you simply need a Macintosh with OS X and an Ethernet cable. All of the Wesleyan residential dormatories are wired for ethernet. Set up your computer and plug the ethernet cable into the appropriate port on your computer and then into the orange jack in your room. You must disable your wireless at this time.

Network Settings

Wesleyan's network is configured to assign internet protocol (IP) addresses automatically. If you have previously changed your network settings, you may need to reconfigure your TCP/IP settings. To do so, click the apple in the top left corner of your screen and open your "System Preferences". Choose "Network" and make sure you are configuring your ethernet adapter. Make sure all settings are set to configure automatically and that no "DNS Servers" are specified. Your screen should appear as below:

The Registration Process

When you click apply, you should receive an IP Address in the 192.168.xxx.xxx range. If your network settings say that the network cable is unplugged or your IP address does not match this formula, please contact the helpdesk at x4000.

Now open a any web browser (safari, internet explorer, firefox, etc), and you should be automatically redirected to the registration page.

Because Macintosh (and all other UNIX-based systems) are generally not prone to virus infection, you will be transferred to a link that says "Register this Computer". Click it and wait. Be sure your computer does not fall asleep.

At five minutes past the half-hour (X:35 or X:05) press refresh on your web browser. Your screen should change and say that you have successfully registered.

Continue to press refresh periodically until the page is no longer able to be refreshed. (It will give you an error.) At this time, restart your computer.

If you return to your network settings (apple -> system preferences -> network) your ethernet adapter should now have a 129.133.xxx.xxx IP address. Your internet should work. If your internet does not work and you have a 129.133.15x.xxx IP address, an error has occurred. Please contact the helpdesk for further assistance.
