Using Windows 2000/XP with Resnet

Setting up the Network Configuration

To reach the network status control panel, open Settings from the Start… menu and choose Network and Dial-up Connections. Double click on Local Area Connection. The first window to open will be the Local Area Connection Status window, providing information on the speed and duration of you connection to the network.

Click Properties in this window to open the network properties window shown behind at right. There are four network components (3 for XP Home Edition) that are necessary to successfully connect to Wesleyan's network

  1. Client for Microsoft Networks
  2. Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

If any of these are missing, click the Install button, select the clients which are not listed and click the OK button to install.

Additionally, the Properties for TCP/IP must be set: click on the TCP/IP protocol then click on Properties to see the window below appear. Check both boxes labeled "Obtain an IP address automatically" and click OK.

Once you have set up your computer, you should subscribe to Resnet. This process has changed with the new Windows viruses. Your computer will be scanned for the most recent patches available from Windows Update. If these are not present, you will be redirected to Windows Update. If these scans fail it could be for a number of reasons, including the presence of the XP Firewall (default on in SP2), failure of Windows Update, or an actual virus. To disable the firewall, go to Start -> Settings -> Local Area Connection -> Properties -> Advanced tab and un-check the Firewall box. The virus protection pages will also link you to a web installation of Symantec Antivirus. Please install this if you don't already have antivirus software. Once all these steps are complete, open a web browser and fill out the information on the Wesleyan Resnet Registration Page. If you do not automatically see the Resnet Registration page, visit http://192.168.0.1 otherwise call the ITS Heldesk at x4000.
