Securing Shared Folders in Windows XP

Some folders are automatically shared in Windows XP, making your computer vulnerable to a number of viruses. To close this hole, go to My Computer, then right-click on Shared Documents. Choose "Sharing and Security". (This can also be reached through "Properties" under the "Sharing" tab.)
Uncheck "Allow network users to change my files" to close this security hole. Other shared folders on your computer can be found by going to Start -> Run and typing \\computername (substituting your computer name). This can be found in Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System and looking at the Computer Name tab. Check all folders for the offending setting to completely secure this particular vulnerability.

If you think your computer is already infected with W32.Oror, please see our virus removal tipsheet. and download this fix utility. Unzip and run the program to remove all virus-containing files from your computer. Please also run Windows Update to ensure your computer is sufficiently protected.
