Woodframe Troubleshooting
The Woodframe Overview
Wesleyan's woodframe houses each connect to the internet via a cable modem that is (generally) located in that house's basement. Students in the house may connect to the modem using an ethernet cable or wirelessly through the "woodframe" wireless network. Neither of these two connections is on the Wesleyan residential network, and this means that computers in woodframes will be unable to access anything that requires being on the campus network, such as dragon or windows shared folders. In order to access the Wesleyan network from woodframe houses, students must download and configure VPN (Virtual Private Network). A download for VPN and instructions on how to configure it can be found in your Electronic Portfolio under the Tools Menu.
Using the Reset Switch
Your cable modem and router are attached to a reset switch in your basement. Installed in every woodframe house's kitchen should be a white box with numbers 1-4. Device #1 is configured to reset your modem. If your internet stops working, press device #1 off, wait a few moments, and turn device #1 back on. Your modem should reconnect to the internet within one minute. If the problem persists, it can sometimes fix the problem to leave the modem off for up to 5 minutes.
If the reset switch is unable to restore your internet access or you must reset your internet on a daily basis, this is indicative of a more serious problem. Please call the helpdesk to schedule a house call.
